Chittagong Port Authority chairman Rear Admiral SM Moniruzzaman has expressed optimism about the future of Bangladesh’s youth and the region’s development, envisioning a transformation of the Chattogram-Cox’s Bazar region into a hub comparable to Singapore.

‘Our young generation holds immense potential. We must ensure employment opportunities for them. The Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar region will become like Singapore. Investors are ready, they just need security, trust and sustainability. They want assurance on maritime and port security,’ he said on Thursday.

The CPA chairman was addressing a press conference at the Shaheed Md Fazlur Rahman Munshi Auditorium at the Chattogram port, marking the 138th Port Day.

Senior CPA officials and board members were present at the event.

Highlighting the strategic importance of Chattogram Port, he said, ‘It is the driving force of the country’s economic growth. With trade agreements being signed with several countries, new opportunities are emerging. Notably, the recent Business Summit has opened the door for fresh investments. We must enhance the port’s capacity to accommodate this growth.’

On increasing port efficiency, Rear Admiral Moniruzzaman said, ‘In a competitive global landscape, there’s no alternative to expanding capacity. Within the next five years, the port will need to handle 5 million TEUs of containers annually. Agreements have been signed to build terminals and bay terminals at Matarbari Deep Sea Port. This month marks a milestone for both the country and the port, as Matarbari is set to become operational by 2029.’

The CPA chairman also emphasised improved coordination between the port and customs authorities, saying, ‘Joint operations between the port and customs are yielding results. Auction processes have become more streamlined. With funding from USAID, initiatives are underway to develop a reefer container yard and cold storage facility at the port.’

Addressing automation and digitisation, he said, ‘With the introduction of e-ticketing, all systems are gradually being integrated. We’re implementing a maritime single window system, which will boost our global image. Payment systems will become fully digital. There’s no alternative to digitalisation and decarbonisation. By June, the port’s operations will be fully automated.’

‘The Chattogram Port will emerge as a green maritime corridor. The terminals at Matarbari, Bay Terminal and Laldiar Char will be transformed into green ports,’ he said, adding, ‘Once these terminals are operational, new shipping routes will open, enhancing our regional connectivity.’
