Bangladesh suffered a 192-run defeat in the second and final Test of their two-match series against Sri Lanka at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Wednesday, resulting in their first another clean sweep since the series against India in their backyard in November 2022, after being thrashed by 328 runs in the series opener in Sylhet.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained unbeaten on 81 but he couldn’t find anyone to accompany him, leading to the Tigers bundling out for 318, their highest team total of the series, with two sessions to spare on the fifth day.
Resuming the day on 268-7 – still needing 243 runs – the home side lost their remaining wickets within an hour and half.
Taijul Islam, who was on 10 at the end of the fourth day, could add just four runs before getting out to Kamindu Mendis.
Debutant Hasan Mahmud and Syed Khaled Ahmed also failed to assist Mehidy for a longer period from the other end as both fell for six and two, respectively, to Lahiru Kumara.
Kumara was the standout bowler for the visitors, claiming four, while Kamindu picked up three. Prabath Jayasuiria and Vishwa Fernando picked up two and one wicket, respectively.
Earlier, Sri Lanka, who managed 531 in the first innings, declared their second innings on 157-7 in the morning of day four to set Bangladesh a mountainous target of 511.
In reply, Bangladesh, who were bowled out for 178 in their first innings, made a shaky start, losing their top three batters before reaching triple figures.
Mominul Haque hit a fifty and both Shakib Al Hasan (36) and Liton Das (38) scored some runs but those were not enough chasing the huge total.
Then, with the defeat appearing to be obvious, Mehidy batted aggressively to reach his sixth Test fifty on the fourth day and eventually remain unbeaten.
