The University Grants Commission of Bangladesh recently advised students not to get admitted in 30 private universities across the country.

These universities did not have vice-chancellors and some of these were continuing academic activities on the unapproved campuses and programmes and admitting extra students, defying the Private University Act, 2010 and the commission, the UGC also said.

In two separate notices, issued on April 1, the commission also said that if the students got admitted in these universities and later faced any problem, then the UGC would not take any responsibility.

UGC chairman (additional charge) professor Muhammed Alamgir told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Thursday that the universities, which did not pay heed to their repeated notices to follow the rules, should be closed down.

Due to legal procedure it took long time to do this, he replied to a question.

In a notice, the UGC said that currently in Bangladesh there were a total of 114 private universities out of which academic activities were ongoing on the 104 universities.

The commission requested the admission seekers to watch its website (www.ugc.gov.bd) before getting admitted at any private university.

The commission also said that they had repeatedly asked the universities with on the unapproved campuses and programmes and extra students to stop academic activities.

IBAIS University, America Bangladesh University and The University of Comilla have no legal basis as their temporary approval expired and these institutions had no approved campus, address, vice-chancellor and other legal authorities.

Victoria University of Bangladesh had failed to transfer to permanent campus by time and since January 1, 2023, admission in this university had been stopped.

Central University of Science and Technology’s temporary approval expired and it has no vice-chancellor.

Meanwhile, in the private universities, the main signatories are the vice-chancellors.

Out of 104 private universities, where academic activities are continuing, 74 have vice-chancellors now and 30 do not have any.

The Association of Private Universities of Bangladesh president Sheikh Kabir Hossain said that the private universities were going through hardship then due to fund constraints and lack of skilled workforces and students.

‘If the private universities cannot run properly, then why the government give approval to these universities at the first place,’ he asked.

Kabir also alleged that the UGC could only issue notice but do nothing to improve the services of the private universities.

According to the UGC website, the following 44 private universities have no vice-chancellors right now. Among these universities, in 10 universities, the academic activities are not being started yet.
