The journeys of the holidaymakers ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr began amid traffic congestion on highways and exit points in the capital city on Friday.

The vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway increased since Thursday and it continued to rise on Friday morning.

Although holidaymakers started leaving capital on Friday, the Eid journey is expected to peak on April 8 and 9, according to operators of transport and railways and Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority officials.

Hanif Paribahan general manager Mosarraf Hossain said that they had seen pressure of Eid holidaymakers in the morning.

‘We are facing huge traffic congestion in the Aminbazar bridge area as the four-lane road has turned into a one-lane road due to construction works,’ he added.

Kamalapur Railway station manager Mohamamd Masud Sarwar told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they started facing pressure of people leaving the capital city.

At the Sadarghat launch terminal, a large number of passengers were seen in launches in the afternoon.

Due to the Padma Bridge, the number of passengers on waterways came down significantly, said BIWTA joint director Alamgir Kabir.

‘We are getting a low number of passengers for our launches departing from Sadarghat. We think that we will face huge pressure on April 9,’ he added.

A man and his wife, meanwhile, died after their motorcycle collided with an electric pole at Haluaghat upazila in Mymensingh on Friday during their Eid holiday journey, United News of Bangladesh reported.

The accident took place at about 8:00am on Friday in the Lakshmipur Bazar area of the upazila.

The deceased are Saidur Rahman, 28, of Roumari area of the upazila, and his wife Sonia Akhter, 22.

Confirming the matter, Haluaghat police officer-in-charge Mahbubul Haque said that the couple was riding a motorcycle from Ishwarganj to their home in Roumari for Eid holidays.

On the way, while going to the Lakshmipur Bazar on the Haluaghat border road, the motorcycle lost control and hit an electric pole, killing Saidur Rahman on the spot, said the OC.

The vehicles on the Bangabandhu highway and the Padma Bridge toll plaza were seen waiting in queues since morning, ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· correspondent in Munshiganj reported.

The pressure of vehicle increased on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway since Thursday night.

Gazaria Bhaberchar highway police outpost in-charge Md Humayun Kabir said that the vehicular movement was slowed down due to additional pressure of vehicles from the Meghna Bridge to Daudkandi Meghna-Gumti Bridge.

‘The vehicular pressure has increased on highways ahead of Eid and it is normal. This is why the vehicular movement has slowed down since morning in the Gazaria part of the highway,’ he added.

To celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of the Muslim community, with family and friends, home-going people who booked tickets earlier to smooth their journey, have started their journey by train today, Friday, in the port city, reported ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· staff correspondent in Chattogram.

‘The journey started yesterday evening but this morning the number of passengers increased. The Eid holiday is quite long this time. So, passengers are trying to start their journey a bit earlier compared with previous years,’ said M Moniruzzaman, station officer of Bangladesh Railway, Chattogram.

The station manager also said that a total of 14 inter-district trains were scheduled to carry about 15,000 passengers from Chattogram to different routes and would remain the same before the Eid day.
