
More than 51 percent, or 4849 factories, including textile and garment units across the country, except those in the Dhaka Metropolitan area, have yet to pay monthly wages for the month of March.
According to Industrial Police data, the non-payment percentage for festival allowance is 18.65 percent, totaling 1766 units out of 9469 factories as of 5:00 pm on Monday.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, however, said that nearly 90 per cent of its member factory has already cleared workers’ wages while almost all the factories paid festival allowance to the workers.
Out of the total 9469 factories under the jurisdiction of the Industrial Police, a total of 4620 and 7703 factories have paid monthly wages for March and festival allowances respectively until 5:00 pm, as shown by the IP data.
These factories are situated in six IP zones: Ashulia, Gazipur, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, and Khulna areas.
Among them, 920 garment factories registered with the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, 435 units listed with the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association, and a total of 170 members of the Bangladesh Textile Mills Association have yet to pay March wages.
Additionally, a total of 76 units under the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority and 18 jute mills have also not disbursed March wages, while 3230 non-RMG units listed by the IP remain unpaid for March.
Meanwhile, according to IP data, 181 BGMEA members, 144 BKMEA members, 26 BTMA mills, nine BEPZA units, 10 jute mills, and 1396 non-RMG units listed under the IP jurisdiction have not paid festival allowances.
An IP official mentioned that a significant number of factories are expected to make payments today (Tuesday).
The official added that there are factories that have announced Eid holidays after partial wage payment following discussions with their respective workers.
Additionally, 100 factories listed with IP are known for irregular wage and allowance payments.
BGMEA president S M Mannan Kochi on Monday told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that nearly 90 per of their member factories paid workers wages and almost all the units cleared festival allowance.
Rest of the factories, except two, would clear wages and festival allowances to their workers on Tuesday.
BGMEA president said that they were facing trouble in making payment to the workers before Eid.
The two factories are located in Mirpur area in the city and Ashulia.
