One of the six family members, who sustained burn injuries from a gas cylinder explosion in Bhashantek area of Bangladesh capital Dhaka on Friday, died on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in the city.

The Institute's resident surgeon Tariqul Islam said that 65-year-old Mehrunnesa, who suffered 47 per cent burns, breathed her last at about 8:00am on Saturday.


‘The remaining five victims are still in critical condition,’ he added.

Earlier, Bhashantek Police Station duty officer Md Borhan Uddin told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that the explosion resulting from a gas cylinder leak occurred at about 4:15 am on Friday at a residence in the Shyamalpalli residential area of Bhashantek.

'The explosion occurred after one of the family members lit a match to ignite a mosquito coil,' he added.

The six victims are Md Liton, 52, and his wife Surjo Banu, 30, and their three children  Lamia, 7, Suzon, 9,  Liza, 18, and Surjo's mother Mehrunnesa.

Later, they were admitted to Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute after being rescued by the fire service.
