
An accused was allegedly beaten to death by another accused in a prison cell of Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital on Sunday morning.
The deceased, Md Motahar, 60, hailing from Kawnia village in Barguna district, was an accused in a murder case.
Barishal Kotwali Model police officer-in-charge ATM Anisul Haq said that the attacker, Tariqul Islam, 25, who was an accused in a Patuakhali murder case, was a mentally challenged person.
Tariqul, hailing from Kalagachia village of Patuakhali’s Galachipa upazila, beat two other inmates in the prison cell with a steel stand used for saline pushing, resulting in one death and another injury, the OC said.ÌýÌý
Motahar died at around 1:00pm on Sunday while undergoing treatment at the hospital and the injured, Ajit Mandal, an accused in a theft case, remained under treatment, he said, adding that a legal action would be taken in this regard.Ìý
Barishal Central Jail senior jail super Ratna Ray said, ‘We are investigating the matter. What happened can be known after the investigation. The matter of negligence by the officials is also under investigation.’
According to a source, during the incident, a duty officer had left with the key to take breakfast, locking the prison cell. Thus, other duty officers were unable to enter the cell to intervene in the brawl.
The hospital superintendent Saiful Islam said that there was a Naik and two constables in charge of the prison cell.
Three people, including the mentally challenged patient, were kept in the prison cell, he said, adding that the other two accused were sleeping when they were attacked.
The deceased had injury marks on several parts of his body, the superintendent said, adding that the condition of the injured was stable.
