Power supply to many parts of Sylhet city and its adjoining areas remained suspended as a power plant in the city caught fire on Monday morning.
The fire broke out at around 9:15am at the Kumargaon 225 MW Power Plant in the city and was brought under control at around 10:30am, Sylhet Fire Service and Civil Defence attending officer Shahidul Islam said.
He said that six units of the fire fighters rushed to the spot after receiving the news in this regard and brought the flame under control at around 10:30 pm.
‘The extent of damages caused by the fire incident, however, could not be assessed immediately after the incident,’ Shahidul told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
Power Development Board’s Sylhet regional chief engineer Mohammad Abdul Quadir told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that a high-voltage power supply line started sparking after it torn down and the sparks ensued fire in the abandoned air filters dumped in the power plant.
He said that there was no major damage in the fire incident as the fire brigade members brought it under control soon. But, the power supply to some parts of the city has remained suspended, he said.
‘Effort to resume the power supply to all parts of the city is going on,’ the PDB official said in the afternoon.
