Bangladesh has slipped six notches down and stood at the 112th position out of 148 countries in its ranking in terms of mobile internet speed performance on the global stage, despite the operators making progress in their performance individually, according to the Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index for March.

Bangladesh held the 106th position in the previous report published by the Ookla in February.

As per the latest report, the median download speed in Bangladesh stood at 24.59 Mbps, which was 24.19 Mbps in the previous report published in February.

The top position in the ranking was claimed by Qatar, with a median download speed of 313.30 Mbps, which was 286.42 Mbps in the previous report.

As per the index published by Ookla, neighbouring India secured the 16th position globally, with a median download speed of 105.85 Mbps.

This marks an improvement from its previous position at 17th, where the median download speed was 100.65 Mbps.

Among other South Asian countries, the Maldives secured the 32nd position, Myanmar 104th, Sri Lanka 123rd, Pakistan 127th, Nepal 136th and Afghanistan 145th in terms of mobile internet speed.

Among the five mobile network providers in Bangladesh, Banglalink emerged as the fastest, according to Ookla’s report.

When measuring the consistency of each operator’s performance, Banglalink’s 89 per cent of results indicated at least 5 Mbps minimum download speed and 1 Mbps minimum upload speed.

The Ookla report indicated improvements in internet speed for Banglalink, Grameenphone, Airtel, Robi and state-owned Teletalk compared with that in the previous report.

During the fourth quarter of 2023, Banglalink achieved a median download speed of 26.74 Mbps, followed by Robi with 24.62 Mbps, and Airtel with 23.18 Mbps.

Grameenphone and Teletalk took the last two positions, with a median download speed of 21.78 Mbps and 6.05 Mbps respectively in the same period.

In November 2016, Robi Axiata and Airtel merged.

Bangladesh moved back to its previous position in terms of fixed broadband performance on the global stage too, standing at 108th, just after upping a notch in the previous month.

The median fixed broadband download speed for November was reported at 44.25 Mbps, an increase from the previous report’s median fixed broadband download speed of 43.93 Mbps.

The Speedtest Global Index by Ookla compares internet speed statistics from across the globe and derives its data from monthly tests conducted by actual users using Speedtest.
