In protest at attacks on two physicians in the port city, the Bangladesh Medical Association Chattogram chapter will observe two-hour work abstention on April 21.

The announcement came from a human chain formed by several organisations of physicians in front of Chattogram Medical College Hospital on Thursday afternoon.


They also announced that if the attackers of the two physicians were not arrested, the government and private hospitals would observe two-hour work abstention from 10:00am to 12 noon on April 21, Sunday, and all private practices would remain closed on April 23.

Swadhinata Chikitshak Parishad, Paediatrics Doctors Association, Interns Doctors Association and Private Hospital Association took part in the human chain.

Dr Muzibul Haq, president of the BMA Chattogram chapter, said, ‘We are waiting for justice but are disappointed. We have made the statement of work abstention after five days.’

‘We have no other way to demand justice. We demand the authorities concerned take quick action against those involved in attacking the two physicians,’ he added.

On Wednesday, the Private Medical Institute Association at a press conference threatened the authorities concerned with work abstention if the attackers of the two physicians were not arrested within 24 hours.

On the night of April 11, an officer on duty at the emergency ward of Patiya General Hospital named Raktim Das, 29 came under attack.

On April 14, Riaz Uddin Shiplo, 30, a physician of Chattogram Medical Centre Hospital was attacked by a victim’s relatives who died after a day of admission.
