A group of unidentified assailants attacked Ali Hossain, a chairman candidate with horse symbol in the forthcoming upazila elections at Juri upazila in Moulvibazar.
The police arrested two people on Friday morning for their alleged involvement in the incident.
The arrested are Muhib Mia, 40, and Sohail Mia, 30.
According to police, victim family and eyewitness sources, miscreants attacked the candidate during an election campaign in front of Juri Upazila Health Complex on Wednesday morning.
Chairman candidate Ali Hossain who was injured in the attack was first admitted to Juri Upazila Health Complex.
Later, he was sent to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
He is now undergoing treatment at the hospital.
A video of the attack, meanwhile, went viral in social media.
Ali Hossain, who was seen injured in the video, said, 鈥楾he attack on me was carried out under leadership of Saidul, Muhib, Sohel by orders of chairman candidate Kishore Roy Chowdhury Moni and West Juri union parishad chairman Anfar Ali. At that time, they also tried to kidnap me.鈥�
In another viral video, chairman candidate Ali Hossain is seen being forced into a car.
According to several local sources, three other people, including chairman candidate Ali Hossain, wanted the horse symbol.
On the day of allotment of symbols, there was a lot of commotion. Ali Hossain got the horse symbol through a lottery as there were multiple candidates.
Ali Hossain鈥檚 younger brother Sourav Ahmad said, 鈥楧uring an election campaign, my brother was attacked by the people of another chairman candidate, Kishore Roy Chowdhury Moni. Saidul, Muhib and Sohail tried to kidnap him. Later, my cousins saw him and rescued him.鈥�
Cup and saucer symbol chairman candidate Kishore Roy Chowdhury Moni said, 鈥楢li Hossain is contesting contested the elections against the opinion of his family members and relatives. So, they attacked him.鈥�
The other two candidates in the Juri upazila elections, MA Mueed Farooq and Rinku Ranjan Das, said in separate statements that the incident was not desirable in any way.
They demanded punishment for those involved in the incident through fair investigation.
Humayun Kabir, inspector for investigation of the Juri police station, said that the victim鈥檚 brother, Saurav Ahmed, filed a case with the police station accusing Saidul, Muhib, Sohel and 3-4 other people in the case.
Two people have been arrested in the case, he said.
Juri upazila election officer Mostafizur Rahman said, 鈥楴o one has given us a written complaint in this regard. If anyone complains, legal action will be taken.鈥�
