Police submitted a charge sheet against online activist Pinaki Bhattacharya and former joint secretary of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Mofizur Rahman Ashik, in a case filed in 2022 under the Digital Security Act 2018.

The Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police recently submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, said court officials on Sunday.

CTTC, however, dropped the name of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia鈥檚 former assistant press secretary, Mushfiqul Fazal Ansari, due to a lack of concrete evidence against him in the case.

On October 15, 2022, sub-inspector Abdullahil Maruf of the CTTC unit of the DMP filed a case with the Ramna Model Police Station, accusing three people.

According to the case, the accused knew each other and have always indulged in spreading misleading information to hurt the country鈥檚 sovereignty.

CTTC, in its charge sheet, mentioned that Pinaki Bhattacharya, who is staying abroad, had been spreading false and deceptive information in the form of rumours on his Facebook page to create chaos in the country.

It added that the accused Mofizur deliberately tried to tarnish the image and reputation of the state through anti-state propaganda on social media.

Mofizur was arrested by CTTC for this case, but now he is on bail, while Mushfiqul Fazal Ansari lives in the USA as an expatriate.
