The Dhaka North City Corporation has started providing umbrellas, oral saline, and drinking water to rickshaw pullers for their health safety amid the ongoing heatwave.

The DNCC will provide 35,000 rickshaw pullers with an umbrella, 12 packets of saline and a half litre-water bottle each.

After inaugurating the distribution in front of its Gulshan-2 office on Sunday, DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam told the media, ‘Rickshaw pullers have been struggling amid the ongoing heatwave. If they fall ill, their families will also suffer.’

He said that the umbrellas were specially made as they can be adjusted to the height of the rickshaw pullers while riding their vehicles.

He further said that several of the 80,000 trees planted in 2023 died because the city corporation did not have gardeners.

The recruitment of 47 gardeners and three supervisers is in process, the mayor said, urging the city dwellers to take care of the trees.

Saudi Arabia ambassador to Bangladesh Essa Yussef Essa Al Dulaihan, ambassador of Bangladesh to Algeria Muhammad Zulqar Nain and Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Syed Ahmed Maroof were present at the event.
