The Dhaka South City Corporation terminated three of its workers for their neglect of responsibilities in the death of a 13-year-old school student under a speeding DSCC dustcart.
In two separate orders issued on Monday, the DSCC terminated the designated driver of the dustcart, Md Kamal and two of its cleaners of region-5, Md Akter Hossain and Md Abdul Kader Zilani Babu.
Both the orders came into effect immediately.
The order revealed that rather than operating the dustcart assigned to him, driver Kalam passed on the task to another person, who was not even a driver, which ultimately resulted in the accident and the unfortunate death.Â
Kalam was terminated from his position for his severe neglect of responsibility, which also tarnished the image of the DSCC, and will receive 90 days’ salary as per rule, said the order.
Another order stated that since Akter, a daily-wage based cleaner at DSCC region-5, Waste Management Department, and the assistant of the dustcart, was absent that day, cleaner Abdul sent his cousin Md Rubel as a proxy. Subsequently, Rubel drove the vehicle at the direction of designated driver Kalam.
Thus, Akter was terminated for his absence from work, and Abdul, who was also a daily-wage based cleaner at DSCC region-5, Waste Management Department, was terminated for assigning the task to someone who was not an employee of DSCC, read the order.
On April 25 night, Md Mahin Ahmed, a class VII student of Motijheel Ideal School, was ran over by the dustcart of Dhaka South City Corporation at Mugda Borobazar in the capital Dhaka.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Motijheel division deputy commissioner Hayatul Islam Khan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they arrested the driver of the dustcart Rubel while a case was filed in connection with the Mugdha police station.
With Mahin, at least nine people have lost their lives in accidents involving city corporation dustcarts since April 2021.
