Two children, from two neighbouring families, reportedly died of food poisoning in sadar upazila of Gazipur Sunday night.

The deceased were identified as Jannatul, 4, daughter of Shahjahan Mia of Salna Tekbari area in Gazipur City Corporation and Mahim, 4, son of Shah Alam, of Harichandi area in Fulchhari police station.


The children fell sick suddenly while playing with each other adjacent to their houses in Salna Tekbari area at about 11:30pm. When their condition deteriorated, they were taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared them dead, according to the deceased families.

The resident physician of the hospital primarily suspected that the duo died due to food poisoning.

‘We could know the actual cause of death after autopsy,’ the physician added.

Jannatul’s father Shahjahan Mia said that his daughter and Mahim ran back home from outside at about 11:30pm as some dogs chased them. Jannatul’s knees were shaking at that moment.

Later, they were taken to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital as the duo lost their sense and Jannatul lay down to the floor, he said.

But on-duty doctor of the hospital declared them dead on arrive, Shahjahan said, adding that they were buried at about 1:00am after autopsy.

Gazipur sadar police station officer-in-charge Syed Rafiul Karim said that they were investigating if the children had eaten something.

‘We will take legal action after investigating the matter,’ the OC added.
