
A total of 1,588 candidates have submitted nomination papers in 112 upazilas in the third phase of upazila parishad elections, said the Election Commission on Thursday in the last day of filing nomination papers.
Out of this, 570 people are vying for the post of chairman, 618 people are for the post of vice-chairman and 400 people are for the reserved vice-chairman posts for women.
Only one nomination paper has been submitted for the post of vice chairman in Bhandaria of Pirojpur and Abhaynagar in Jashore respectively.
Similarly, only one nomination paper has been submitted for each post of woman vice-chairman in Chandanaish of Chittagong, Chatak of Sunamganj and Bhandaria of Pirojpur.
However, there is no lone candidature for the post of chairman in this phase.
In the third phase, maximum 10 people have submitted nomination papers for the post of chairman in Raniganj of Naogaon, Gangchara of Rangpur and Sundarganj of Gaibandha respectively.
Maximum 16 candidates have submitted nomination papers for the post of vice-chairman in Bogura sadar and 10 candidates for the post of woman vice-chairman in Patuakhali sadar.
The third phase nomination papers will be scrutinised on May 5.
The last date for withdrawal of candidature is 12 May while electoral symbols among the candidates would be allotted on May 13 as the voting will be held on May 29 for the third phase.
The first phase of upazila polls at 148 upazilas would be held on May 8 while the second phase of the upazila polls at 161 upazila on May 21.
