Theatre troupe Opera staged its production titled ‘Closet Land’ criticising state censorship at the Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of Bangladesh Mahila Samity on Saturday.
‘Closet Land’ is the fifteenth theatre production of Opera. It has been directed by Sazzad Sabbir, written by Indian filmmaker, film producer and writer Radha Bharadwaj and translated by Nahid Smrity.
‘Closet Land’ revolves around a young woman litterateur, who is apprehended and interrogated by watchdogs of a totalitarian regime on charges of writing subversive works.
The interrogator asks the author about an unpublished story about a little girl who discovers a Narnia-like kingdom inside a closet. The girl’s mother locked her up in the closet to punish her.
Although the author is tortured physically and emotionally, she refuses to admit that she committed a crime by writing the story.
Sazzad Sabbir portrayed the character of the interrogator and Nahid Smrity played the character of woman litterateur in the play.
‘I am happy to play the character of an author who takes a stance against state censorship in the play. “Closet Land” has received a huge response from the audience. We staged the play on Friday and Saturday at Bangladesh Mahila Samity. We will stage the production again after four months. I thank all who have supported us during our journey,’ said Nahid Smrity.
Stage, light and costume were designed by Sazzad Sabbir and background music was designed by Nahid Smrity.
