The Rajshahi district police on Sunday night withdrew four policemen from the Premtoli police outpost at Godagari upazila allegedly for demanding Tk 2 lakh extortion from a youth on Saturday night.

In a separate incident in the same upazila, the district police on Sunday night also withdrew six members of the force from the Godagari model police station allegedly for extorting Tk 2 lakh from a farmer.


Saifur Rahman, superintendent of Rajshahi district police, said that they withdrew sub-inspector Rezaul Karim, assistant sub-inspector Anowarul Islam, and constables Rezaul Karim and Milon Hossain from the Premtoli police outpost and attached them to the district police lines on Sunday night.

He said that necessary actions will be taken after investigation.

Earlier on Saturday, a group of four plainclothes policemen allegedly picked up a young man forcibly from Gogram village in Godagari upazila while the latter was hanging out with his friends at about 9:00pm.

The youth said that he was first handcuffed and was taken to the nearby bank of the Padma River, close to the Premtoli police outpost, where the policemen demanded Tk 2 lakh extortion from him.

He alleged that the policemen threatened him that they would frame him in a drug case if he fails to comply.

He further alleged that the policemen also forcibly took Tk 3,000 from his mobile money account.

Meanwhile, as the news of his abduction spread, local people confined assistant sub-inspector Anowarul Islam, who came to the Grogram market, demanding to know the whereabouts of the boy.

On information, Premtoli police outpost in-charge Osman Gani rushed to the Grogram market with his force and reportedly started beating, leaving several villagers injured. A clash ensued with the villagers throwing brick chips at the police vehicle.

Later, assistant police commissioner (Godagari circle) Sohel Rana and Godagari model police officer-in-charge Abdul Matin went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Later on, the youth was released at about 11:30pm.

Meanwhile, a case has been lodged with the Godagari model police, accusing unnamed people for attack on police vehicle, said officer-in-charge Abdul Matin.

In the other incident, Rajshahi police superintendent Saifur Rahman said that they withdrew six personnel from the Godagari model police station and attached them to the district police lines as a primary investigation found true the allegations against them of taking extortions from a farmer by threats.聽聽

He said that they would take action following a divisional inquiry.

The accused police officials are Godagari model police station sub-inspectors Sattabrata Sarkar and Akramuzzaman, assistant sub-inspectors Abdul Karim Mintu, Manjurul Islam and Ranju Ahmed, and constable Mahbubur Rahman.

Earlier on Saturday night, the accused six policemen reportedly detained Abdus Samad, a farmer of bordering Char Asharia village, from his house and took him to an isolated place and demanded Tk 4 lakh extortion, threatening him that otherwise they would frame him in a drug case.

Later, his family gave the policemen Tk 2 lakh and took Abdus Samad from them.
