The chief justice, Obaidul Hassan, said on Tuesday that a total of only 2,000 judges are struggling to dispose of more than 40 lakh cases pending with courts across the country.
He came up with the remark while inaugurating a TV show on legal development. Retired Appellate Division judge Krishna Debnath will anchor the show to be broadcasted by the Bangladesh Television.
A total of 40.51 lakh cases were pending as of September 30, 2023, of which 5,28,583 were pending with the Supreme Court and 34,98,634 others were pending with the subordinate courts, according to the Supreme Court statistics.
There are nearly 2,000 lower court judges and 92 Supreme Court judges—84 High Court judges and 8 Appellate Division judges—according to the office of the Supreme Court registrar general.
The chief justice in the discussion said that it takes 10 years to dispose of one case while in the meantime parties of the case lose everything.
The chief justice said that the TV show would create awareness about laws and rights among people by presenting short plays of crimes of various types.
Justice Krishna Debnath urged viewers to share the TV show to others to make it a success.
The SC unit Legal Aid Service organisation organsied the inauguration ceremony of the TV show, first of its kind in Bangladesh.
The meeting was addressed, among others, by law minister Anisul Huq, High Court division judge Naima Haider, who is also the chairman of the Supreme Court chapter of the National Legal Aid Service Organisation, attorney general AM Amin Uddin and Bangladesh Television director general Md Jahangir Alam.   Â
