The High Court on Wednesday stayed the leasing process for setting up a cattle market at Aftabnagar in the capital.
The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque also asked local government division鈥檚 secretary and the mayor of Dhaka North City to explain in four weeks why the makeshift cattle market in the residential area would not be declared illegal.
The court issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Aftabnagar Zahurul Islam City Society president Alamgir Hossain Dhali and its general secretary Gias Uddin Kajal challenging the leasing notice of setting up a makeshift cattle market in the residential area.
On April 4, Dhaka North City Corporation鈥檚 chief revenue officer issued the lease notice for establishing makeshift cattle markets in the capital on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
As per the notice, 11 cattle markets would be set up in the city.
Lawyers Shah Monjurul Hoque opposed setting up the cattle market in the residential area, stating that cattle could be sold using online platforms.
Deputy attorney general Amit Das Gupta argued that the High Court could not grant the stay order on the government鈥檚 policy decision like establishment of a cattle market.聽
The Dhaka North City would appeal against the High Court decision.
In 2023, the High Court after hearing a writ petition filed by lawyer Md Eunus Ali Akond, also stayed the lease for setting up cattle market in Aftabnagar.
The Appellate Division later allowed people concerned to set up the cattle market by staying the High Court order.
