
Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Wednesday afternoon issued a fresh nor’wester warning for the next 72 hours, predicting that hailstorm and thunderstorm are likely to continue for a while.
May is the most nor’wester -prone month with 12 days in the month recording nor’wester on an average, according to the BMD. The second nor’wester -affected month is June with 10 days of thunderstorms, followed by 9 days of nor’wester recorded in September and 8 days in April.
With regard to seasons, 51 per cent of all nor’wester occur during monsoon, followed by 38 per cent nor’wester recorded in pre-monsoon, 8 per cent in post-monsoon and 3 per cent recorded in winter months.
‘The number of nor’wester days are increasing,’ said Bazlur Rashid, a meteorologist at the BMD and a climate researcher.
This April, however, no nor’wester occurred except for Sylhet division. An unprecedented heatwave swept Bangladesh throughout April.
Bangladesh has seen nor’wester hit regularly since May 2 with heavy wind, lightning and hailstorm. At least 24 people died in the storm since May 4.
On Wednesday, Bangladesh’s highest maximum day temperature of 33.4C was recorded in Kumarkhali.
Dhaka saw its temperature drop to 30.4C on Wednesday.
The BMD in its weather bulletin issued at 6:00pm on Wednesday predicted thundershowers with squalls in all eight divisions, including Dhaka today with a further drop in day temperature.
In the 24 hours till 6:00pm, Bangladesh’s highest rainfall of 51mm was recorded in Rajshahi.
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre in its bulletin issued on Wednesday afternoon said that rivers in the northeastern haor region might stabilise or start receding over the next 48 hours.
The India Meteorological Department reported significantly excess amount of rainfall in Bangladesh’s upstream between Tuesday and Wednesday with West Bengal recording 324 per cent excess rainfall, and Gangetic West Bengal recording 485 per cent excessive rain.
The IMD in its weather bulletin issued on Wednesday afternoon predicted widespread rainfall in its all north-eastern states in Bangladesh’s upstream over the next seven days, including heavy rainfall over much of the area tomorrow.
