The Dhaka South City Corporation has started the restoration and beautification work of 8.7 kilometres of the Manda canal, one of the largest canals in the Dhaka city.Â
The DSCC mayor, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, laid the foundation stone for the ‘Manda Canal restoration and Aesthetic Environment Creation’ work near Shapla Bridge in the Mugda area on Wednesday, said a press release.Â
The project is part of the DSCC’s ‘Canal Restoration, Renovation, and Aesthetic Environment Creation Project,’ with a budget of Tk 898.73 crore allocated to restore 4.78km of Shyampur, 3.9km of Jirani, 2.4km of Kalunagar, and Manda canals in the capital.
Expressing hope that changes to the canals will be visible by June next year, the mayor said that all the project works would commence by December this year.Â
The mayor said that about 35,000 trees would be planted along the banks of the Manda canal, which is connected to the Balu River via North Manda, Sukhnagar, Shekher Jayga, and Trimohoni in the Khilgaon area, starting from the capital’s Maniknagar, to create an aesthetic environment in the area.
There are plans to plant trees along the banks of the other three canals and the old channel of the Buriganga River, the mayor said.
He said, ‘We can green the area through this tree plantation programme.’
The Tk 397 crore Manda Canal restoration project includes clearing garbage and silt, establishing a bicycle lane, seating arrangement, coffee shops, food courts, 32 pedestrian bridges, six vehicle bridges, public toilets, walkways, and various other amenities.
The mayor also inaugurated development work of Postogola Mohashoshan, recognised as the national cremation ground.
