Several hundred garment workers on Wednesday rallied in front of Srama Bhaban in the capital’s Bijoynagar demanding immediate reopening of their factory in Gazipur.
The owner of the factory had shut it since the Eid-ul Fitr vacation.
Workers of the Danys Knitwear Ltd said that the factory owner illegally shut the factory to cheat workers.
They demanded implementation of the tripartite agreement signed on April 25.
Leader of the factory workers Zahirul Islam said that in the tripartite meeting the factory owner agreed to pay workers by May 7 but the owner was absconding.
Since Monday the workers declared a continuous sit-in in front of Srama Bhaban demanding the implementation of the agreement, but the government failed to implement it, he said.
Bangladesh Garment and Sweaters Workers Trade Union Centre general secretary KM Ruhul Amin said that the factory was yet to implement the new wage scale declared in December.
Instead of paying workers’ dues, the factory owner was conspiring to shut the unit, he said.
They will wage tougher movements until the agreement is not implemented, KM Ruhul Amin said.
Garment worker leaders Hafizul Islam, MN Shahin, Jalal Haider and others spoke at the rally.
They said that the protest would continue until workers were given their legal benefits.
Managing director of the factory, Kamal Hossain Haoladar, could not be reached for his comment over the phone.
He did not even respond to the text message.
