No students passed from 51 educational institutions, mostly madrassahs, in the Secondary School Certificate and its equivalent examinations this year across Bangladesh.
Last year (2023), 48 educational institutions got zero pass rate.
However, at a press briefing held during publishing the results at the Secretariat on Sunday, education minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury defended these institutions, saying that taking punitive measures against these educational institutions will be irrational.
These institutions need more facilities which will allow them to make strides in streamlining quality and standard. Â
Among the educational institutions with no passes, the highest, 42, are under the Madrassah Education Board, while three are under the Dhaka Education Board, four are under the Dinajpur Education Board and two are under the Rajshahi Education Board.
From 11 educational institutions only one student appeared in the examinations but failed. Among these 10 are madrassahs.
The institutions are—Dhorsha Adorso High School in Rajshahi; Laskorpur Borakota Balika Dakhil Madrassah in Barishal; Uttar Keshobpur Girls’ Dakhil Madrassah in Patuakhali; Nurnagar Dakhil Madrassah in Pabna; Palgaon DS Dakhil Madrassah in Mymensingh; Tokra Bhasa Islamia Ekramia Dakhil Madrassah in Panchagarh; Birkoya Dakhil Madrassah in Rajshahi; Pahalwanpara Adhunic Dakhil Madrassah in Bogura; Natuarpar Girls’ Dakhil Madrassah in Barishal; Saluatala Dakhil Madrassah in Sherpur; and Nator Dakhil Madrassah in Chapainawabganj districts.
On Sunday Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury also said that very few students appeared for the examinations from the educational institutions with zero pass rate.
‘If we stop Monthly Pay Order facilities at any institutions the students and the teachers will be affected,’ he said, adding, ‘that is not rational as per my opinion. If any institutions lag behind, they should get more facilities.’Â
The minister, however, said that it could be considered that if at all these institutions should be given approval as exam centres.
Under the Dhaka board, the educational institutions with zero pass rate are— Begum Rupban High School in Ghior under Manikganj; Shomjani High School in Kalihati under Tangail; and Chartarotakia Mouza Girls’ High School in Pakundia under Kishoreganj district.
The four schools with zero pass rate under Dinajpur board are—Ghogoa Girls’ High School in Sundarganj under Gaibandha; Sheikh Fajilatunnesa Mujib Girls’ High School in Dimla under Nilphamari; Puraba Sukhaty Girls’ High School in Nageshwari under Kurigram; and Chowmohani Model High School in Birganj under Dinajpur district.
Under the Rajshahi board, no one passed from Dhorsha Adorso High School in Mohanpur under Rajshahi and Baraikuri Ideal Girls’ High School in Atrai under Naogaon district.
This year in 105 educational institutions up to 10 per cent candidates passed; in 143 institutions 10–20 per cent passed; in 1,795 institutions 20–50 per cent passed; and in 24,804 institutions from 50 per cent to below 100 per cent passed.
The number of the institutions with 100 per cent pass rate has increased this year to 2,968 comparing with the previous year’s 2,354 institutions.
In 2022, the number of educational institutions with zero pass rate was 50; in 2021, the number was 18; in 2020, the number was 104; in 2019 the number was 107; and in 2018, it was 109.
