
A young woman died allegedly due to medical negligence while undergoing a surgery for appendicitis in Wazirpur upazila of Barishal on Sunday.
The incident occurred at Maer Doa Clinic and Digital Diagnostic Center at West Satla of the upazila.
The deceased, Sumaiya Akhter, 18, is the daughter of Helal Mir of Khajuria village in Agailjhara upazila, said inspector (Investigation) of Wazirpur Police Station Touhiduzzaman.
He said that Sumaiya was enduring pain on the right聽 side of her lower abdomen. Then her elder brother Rabiul Mir took Sumaiya on Saturday afternoon to Mayer Doa Clinic.
They were told that she was suffering from appendicitis and was taken to the clinic for surgery without any tests at 9:30pm.
The doctor of the clinic, Sadhan Basu, performed surgery on Sumaiya and left the operation room at around 10:30pm. He told Sumaiya鈥檚 family that the patient鈥檚 condition was not good.
The clinic authorities declared Sumaiya dead in the early hours on Sunday.
On information, the body of the young woman was recovered by the police and sent to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations.
Inspector Touhiduzzaman said that a case would be filed in this connection.
Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased said that without any kind of examination, the doctor and the employees of the clinic said that Sumaiya had appendicitis pain. Later they took her to the operation theater without taking their permission where she died.
The clinic owner, Rezaul Karim, could not be contacted as his mobile phone was switched off.
Barisal district civil surgeon Maria Hasan said that she had not received any information about the death of the patient. If the relatives of the deceased file any complaint, she will investigate and take action, she said.
