At least 10 people were injured in a clash between the supporters of the two chairman candidates in Atgharia upazila parishad elections in Pabna on Sunday evening.
The supporters of current chairman and also chairman candidate Tanveer Islam alleged that the supporters of other chairman candidate engineer Saiful Islam Kamal attacked them.
The incident occurred at about 10:00pm on Sunday in Motigachha area of Debottar union of the upazila.
According to police and locals, Saiful Islam Kamal鈥檚 supporters beat Tanveer Islam鈥檚 supporters on their way back after inaugurating Tanveer鈥檚 electoral office.
Following the incident, attacks and counter-attacks took place and at least 10 people on both sides were injured.
Eight of the injured were admitted to Atgharia Upazila Health Complex and Pabna General Hospital.
Tanveer Islam said that Saiful Islam鈥檚 supporters attacked his supporters in Chadva area a few days ago. 鈥楳any of my supporters were seriously injured by the attack. I wanted to take a suitable revenge for the attack,鈥� he added.
However, Saiful Islam denied the allegation and said that they attacked his supporters earlier, and an elderly woman was injured by the attack.
Hadiul Islam, officer-in-charge of the Atgharia police station, said, 鈥榃e have heard about the incident.鈥�
Both sides are accusing each other of the attacks. Legal action will be taken after receiving a written complaint, he added.
