A Dhaka magistrate court on Thursday extended till June 30 the deadline for submitting the probe report in the case filed over murders of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi in 2012.

Additional chief metropolitan magistrate Md Mahbubul Haque ordered the 108th extension of the deadline as the Rapid Action Battalion failed to submit its report on the day and sought the extension, court officials said. Earlier, two courts expressed dissatisfaction over the investigators’ failure to complete investigation into the sensational murder case.

Sagar, then news editor of Maasranga Television, and Runi, then senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were murdered at their rented flat at West Rajabazar in Dhaka on February 11, 2012. Their only son, Mahir Sarowar Megh, then 5, was at the flat at that time.

Nousher Ali Roman, brother of Runi, filed the case with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station on the following day.

The double murder sparked a nationwide outcry, particularly among journalists. Since the murder, the journalist community has been demanding justice for it.

There has, however, been hardly any progress in the probe in the past 12 years, despite repeated assurances from the authorities.
