A Rajshahi University student accused Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders and activists of torturing and intimidating him at Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall of the university early Thursday.

Sobuj Bishwas, a 2022-23 academic session’s student of the Bangla department, also said that he had left the campus in fear of further torture.

Sobuj lodged a written complaint with the Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall provost, stating that he was threatened with death and would not return to the campus unless the authorities ensured security of his life.

In his application, Sobuj alleged that hall unit vice-president Atikur Rahman Atiq along with his 8-10 followers stormed into his room at about 2:00am on Thursday and forcibly took him to the roof of the hall mosque where they beat him severely with cricket bats.

‘At one stage of torturing, the BCL activists also issued death threat to me stating that I am a Shibir activist,’ he said, adding that when he told the BCL men that he was from the Hindu community, the latter beat him more severely.

Sobuj told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that he suffered fractures of his legs in the beating and left the campus as he was feeling insecure.

BCL leader Atikur Rahman, however, denied the allegation and claimed that he did not know Sobuj and his rival group was hatching a conspiracy against him.

Hall provost professor Jahangir Hossain said that they would take necessary action after talking with the victim and the accused students.

Earlier on Sunday morning, a group of people led by Atikur Rahman and activists Sunny Hazari and Azizul Haque beat Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall’s gaurd Monirul Islam on suspicion of providing information about Atik’s movement in the hall to the Chhatra Shibir and Chhatra Dal activists.

Atik also threatened hall provost professor Jahangir Alam over the phone for not cooperating with him over the hall’s matter, the provost said.

Following the incident, the Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall authorities decided to recommend the university administration to expel Atikur Rahman and his two followers from the university for their involvement in beating up the security guard.

Earlier, two factions of Chhatra League clashed on the university campus early Sunday over sitting in the guest room of Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall.

During the clash, BCL activists, wearing helmets and carrying machetes and sticks, exploded six crude bombs, leaving nine of them injured.

The duo groups faced off against each other at Shaheed Suhrawardy Hall early Tuesday following Sunday’s incident.
