Politicians, academics and professionals on Saturday at a discussion in Dhaka said that the Indian government was depriving Bangladesh of the justified amount of water from the common rivers flowing between Bangladesh and India.

The International Farakka Committee organised the discussion at the National Press Club to mark the 48th anniversary of Farakka Long March Day led by Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani in 1976, where coordinator of the IFC Bangladesh committee, Mostafa Kamal Majumder chaired.


Jatiya Party faction chairman Mostafa Jamal Haider said that Maulana Bhashani realised that the Farakka barrage would be suicidal for Bangladesh and it would turn the country into a desert.

He called on all the political parties to be united for getting the justified amount of water for Bangladesh from more than 54 common rivers flowing between Bangladesh and India.

Mostafa Jamal Haider also demanded resolution of Teesta river water issue where India also diverted the flow of water making barrage.

Bhashani Onusari Parishad convener Sheikh Rafiqul Islam Bablu called on the world community to become vocal against the Indian government who was breaking the international law on waters of the common rivers.

Journalist Gaziul Hasan Khan said that without pressure from the country鈥檚 political parties the Indian government would not give justified amount of water of the common rivers.

Writer and researcher Siraj Uddin Shathi said that the political parties of our country should reach a consensus on the issue of getting justified water sharing from India.

Labour Party chairman Mostafizur Rahman Iran said that the Indian government was blocking the flow of water of most of the 54 common rivers.

He called on all to become vocal against the Indian government.
