
Members of the Rapid Action Battalion on Saturday arrested Bangladesh Ju-Jitsu Association general secretary Rafiqul Islam on charges of repeatedly raping a female ju-jutsu athlete and threatening to post images and videos of the rape scenes on social media.
A female ju-jitsu player accused of assisting Rafiqul in the rape was also arrested in connection with the victim’s complaint with the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
In a drive, RAB-12 and its detective branch detained 65-year-old Rafiqul from Mirpur and the accused female player from the Shah Ali area of the city.
Rafiqul is now in RAB custody, while the arrested woman has been handed over to the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Rafiqul was arrested under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the Pornography Control Act, according to RAB legal and media wing director commander Arafat Islam, who spoke during a press briefing at his office.
Earlier on May 5, the victim reported the entire incident in writing to the ministry of youth and sports with the allegations that Rafiqul used to rape and physically abuse female players during ju-jutsu practice.
In response to the allegation, the sports ministry on May 13 formed a three-member investigation committee to complete the probe report by June 12.
National Sports Council legal officer and a member of the investigation committee SM Kabirul Hasan told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· on Saturday that the committee called the victim for a hearing on May 14.
‘We have got some evidence from the victim that confirms she became pregnant and had an abortion,’ said Kabirul.
‘There could be four additional victims by the same accused person, as we anticipate after speaking with the primary victim,’ he added.
Ju-jitsu, is a family of Japanese martial arts and a system of close combat (unarmed or with a minor weapon) that can be used in a defensive or offensive manner to kill or subdue one or more weaponless or armed and armored opponents.
