An international conference on cancer and palliative care is scheduled to be held at Kumudini Complex in Mirzapur of Tangail on May 22, the authorities said at a press conference organised at Kumudini’s Dhaka office on Sunday.
Kumudini Welfare Trust of Bengal Ltd in collaboration with Harvard University, Simmons University and Massachusetts General Hospital in the United States will organise the conference, said the conference organising committee secretary and Kumudini Women’s Medical College principal professor Md Abdul Halim.
He said that the aim of the conference was to provide a platform to healthcare professionals, researchers and policymakers to share their knowledge and experiences in the field of cancer and palliative care.
Halim expected that some 400 experts and researchers would be present at the conference where a couple of scientific papers would be presented.
State minister for health and family welfare Rokeya Sultana is expected to inaugurate the event and address the conference as chief guest.
Organisers said that the conference would introduce the latest advances in cancer treatment, palliative care and pain management.
It will be a great opportunity for participants to build networks and exchange ideas in the field, they added.
A stakeholder’s workshop on palliative care will also be held following the conference.
Social welfare minister Dipu Moni will inaugurate the event at the same venue.
Kumudini trust will organise the event in collaboration with Palliative Care Society of Bangladesh and Institute of Palliative Medicine in Kerala of India.
The trust will launch a community based palliative service named ‘Compassionate Kumudini’ at Mirzapur to take palliative care service to the people.
Among others, Kumudini Nursing College principal sister Rina Cruze, Kumudini Welfare Trust’s board of trustees Mohammed Farooque and chief financial officer Manik K Sarker were present at the press conference.
Kumudini Welfare Trust is one of the oldest and largest charitable organisations established in 1947 by philanthropist and businessman Ranada Prasad Saha in Tangail.
Later, the trust was expanded to other areas of the country.
