
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on Sunday held a seminar to mark the World IBD Day 2024 on its campus in Dhaka.
BSMMU vice-chancellor professor Deen Mohd Noorul Huq was the chief guest in the programme, said a press release.
Speakers said that Inflammatory Bowel Disease was a disorder that caused severe inflammation in the human digestive system. There were about one crore IBD patients in the world. Since 2010, ‘World IBD Day’ had been observed every year on May 19 to raise public awareness about the disease. The IBD clinic of BSMMU had been providing advanced medical services to such patients since 2017.
Chairman of gastroenterology department professor Dewan Saifuddin Ahmed presided over the seminar, where BSMMU pro-vice-chancellor (research and development) professor Md Moniruzzaman Khan, pro-vice-chancellor (academic) professor Mohammed Atiqur Rahman, pro-vice-chancellor (administration) professor Saif Uddin Ahmed were special guests. BSMMU registrar professor ABM Abdul Hannan, and proctor professor Md Habibur Rahman Dulal, among others, were present.
Coordinator of IBD clinic Chanchal Kumar Ghosh and Phase B resident Aditi Sarkar presented scientific article at the event, conducted by assistant professor of gastroenterology department Fazlul Karim Chowdhury. Chairman of colorectal surgery department professor Md Shahadat Hossain Sheikh and gastroenterology department professor Md Rajibul Alam also spoke in the programme.
Professor Deen Mohd Noorul Huq said that many researches had been completed in the IBD clinic of the university, and some were ongoing. People should be informed about this.
Professor Chanchal Kumar Ghosh said that modern and advanced treatment of IBD was possible in Bangladesh. In the past, many IBD patients travelled abroad for treatment.
‘At present, the country is saving a lot of money by providing advanced treatment to these patients through the IBD clinic of BSMMU,’ he added.
