Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge court on Sunday sent the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader and former mayoral candidate of Dhaka South City Corporation Ishraque Hossain to jail in a case, filed over provocative activities in October last year.

Judge Mohammad Ash-Shams Joglul Hossain passed the order, rejecting his bail petition after Ishraque surrendered before the court and sought bail in the case, said his lawyer Taherul Islam.

The court, however, granted bail to Ishraque, also the eldest son of former BNP leader and mayor freedom fighter Sadeque Hossain Khoka, in 11 other cases on the same day, he added.

The case was filed with Paltan model police station on October 29, 2023, against Mian Zahidul Islam Arefy, who introduced himself as an ‘adviser’ to the US president Joe Biden, Ishraque Hossain, and retired lieutenant general Chowdhury Hasan Sarwardi.

According to the case statement, Arefy, appearing at a BNP press conference on October 28, said that he would recommend the US government to impose bans on police, ministry of home affairs, and division of law and justice.

He claimed to be in contact with the US president 10-15 times a day and that the US government was in favour of an election-time caretaker government, according to the case statement.
