The police on Tuesday foiled an attempt by the Ganosamhati Andolan to besiege the Bangladesh Bank at Dhaka’s Motijheel.
As part of their prescheduled programme, the leaders and activists of the party led by its chief coordinator Zonayed Saki marched towards the central bank at about 11:00am to lay siege to it, demanding the government to publish the list of loan defaulters and money launderers.
The police obstructed them when they reached the Shapla Chattar area, said assistant commissioner for Motijheel Zone of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Golam Rahman.
The protesters then held a brief rally in front of the Shapla Chattar foot over bridge.
Chief coordinator of the party Zonayed Saki condemned the police for obstructing their peaceful march towards the Bangladesh Bank, saying that they would not obey the restrictions imposed by the ‘illegal’ Awarmi League government.
‘We want the Bangladesh Bank to protect the people’s money deposited in different banks,’ Saki said.
He demanded that the Bangladesh Bank must publish the full list of the defaulters and money launderers within June 30, and threatened to wage tougher movement to compel the central bank to publish the list.
Ganosamhati Andolan executive coordinator Abul Hassan Rubel said that the country’s economy was facing an acute crisis, while the reserves were dropping alarmingly.Â
Party central leader Hasan Maruf Rumi called on the government to take immediate steps to tackle the price hikes of the essential commodities.
Party central leader Taslima Akhter said that the frequent increases in the prices of the power and gas had aggravated people’s sufferings. Â
Another central leader Monir Uddin Pappu demanded the central bank to lift the restrictions it had imposed on the journalists’ entry into the bank to collect news.
Other central leaders of the party Bachchu Bhuiyan, Julhasnayeen Babu, Dipak Roy, Toriqul Sujan, Anjan Das, Alif Dewan, among others, spoke at the rally.
