
At least 708 people were killed and 2,426 others injured in 683 road crashes across the country in April, said a report published by the Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh.
During the time, 38.7 per cent or 274 people were killed and 24.66 per cent or 328 more people were injured in 44.65 per cent or 305 motorcycle related crashes.
In the period, 47 people were killed and 36 others were injured in 44 railways accidents and eight people were killed, 10 were injured and one remained missing in six waterways accidents.
The PWAB on Wednesday issued a press release on the monthly report based on different media reports and the statistics of admitted patients at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation.
According to the release, the highest number of road crashes took place in the Dhaka division where in 155 crashes 179 people were killed and 305 more were injured and the lowest in the Barishal division where in 35 crashes 53 people were killed and 48 more were injured.
Among the fatal victims, the highest 156 people were transport workers, mainly drivers, followed by 58 pedestrians, and 36 students.
Forty-nine children became fatal road crash victims in April.
Of the crashes, the highest 47.43 per cent crashes were caused by crushing or hitting pedestrians or other vehicles followed by 25.32 per cent by head-on collisions, 23.13 per cent by losing control and then fell into roadside ditches, 3.36 per cent by other reasons, and 0.29 per cent by getting scarves entangled in the wheels and 0.43 per cent by collision with trains and other road transports.
The highest percentage, 42.45 per cent, of road crashes took place on feeder roads followed by 35.28 per cent on national highways and 14.78 per cent on regional highways.
Out of all road crashes, 6.58 per cent took place in the Dhaka metropolitan city area, and 0.43 per cent inside the Chattogram metropolitan city.
The association blamed frequent movement of motorcycles on highways, no road markings and lights, faulty road designs, vehicular movement on wrong lanes, unskilled, tired and reckless drivers for road crashes.
They demanded implementation of the existing laws to reduce road crashes.
