A two-day long 24th National Conference and Green Expo on ‘Policy Frameworks for Enabling Renewable Energy Investment: A Global and Regional Perspective’ began on Wednesday at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban Auditorium of Dhaka University.

Dhaka University vice-chancellor professor A S M Maksud Kamal presided over the inaugural session while foreign minister Hasan Mahmud was present at the event as chief guest.


The Institute of Energy of the university in cooperation with Greentech Foundation has organised the event.

Adviser to Greentech Foundation Bangladesh & faculty member of BIBM Khondkar Morshed Millat delivered the key-note speech, while associate professor of the institute S M Nasif Shams delivered welcome address.

Executive Director & CEO of Greentech Foundation Bangladesh Lutfor Rahman gave vote of thanks at the event.

Holding the developed countries responsible for carbon emissions, foreign minister Hasan Mahmud said, ‘The developed countries are mainly responsible for carbon emissions. Therefore, they will have to play a vital role to protect the global environment.’

‘I urge leaders of developed counties to come forward with financial support for reducing disaster risks in the most vulnerable countries like Bangladesh due to climate change,’ he added.

Stressing the need for formulating short- term and long-term policy, the vice-chancellor A S M Maksud Kamal said, ‘We need to formulate short-term and long-term policies to increase production of green energy as well as make our environment free from all sorts of pollution.’

The VC expressed his willingness to provide training to youths in renewable energy and the environment at DU to make them skilled human resources.

He sought cooperation from both the public and private sectors to hold the training programme.

The inaugural function was addressed, among others, by principal coordinator of SDG affairs of Prime Minister’s Office Md Akhter Hossain, CEO of Infrastructure Development Company Ltd Md Alamgir Morshed, president of Bangladesh Solar Renewable Energy Association Md Nurul Aktar and chairman of Sustainable & Renewable Energy Development Authority Munira Sultana as special guests.
