Leaders of various labour rights bodies, on Friday at separate rallies in Dhaka, demanded separate allocations in the forthcoming budget for the financial year 2024-25 to support the welfare of labourers.

The Garment Workers’ Trade Union Centre and the Socialist Labour Front organised rallies in front of the National Press Club to press home their demands.

Garment Workers Trade Union Centre president Mantu Ghosh called for a dedicated budget allocation to introduce a rationing system in garment factories, enabling workers to buy essential commodities at reduced prices.

Garment labour leader Joly Talukder highlighted the low wages of garment workers, stating that they were struggling to support their families.

General secretary of the organisation, Sadequr Rahman Shamim, along with central leaders Ziaul Kabir Shamim, Monzur Moin, and others, also spoke at the rally.

The event concluded with a protest procession that paraded different city roads.

Leaders of the Socialist Labour Front echoed the call for a special budget allocation for labourers.

Ahsan Habib Bulbul, general secretary of the organisation, urged the government to introduce a rationing system for workers to purchase essential goods at lower prices.

Central leaders Khalequzzaman Lipon, Abu Sayeem Biplob, Selim Mahmud, and others also addressed the rally.

This event was similarly followed by a protest procession.
