
Pabna district detective police arrested Sultan Mahmud Khan, the chairman of Bharara union parishad in Pabna Sadar upazila and secretary of the union Awami League, Friday night.
He was apprehended in front of Dogachhi union parishad at about 11:30pm and subsequently handed over to Pabna Thana.
Confirming the arrest, Emran Ahmed Tuhin, officer-in-charge of Pabna district detective police, said that there was an arrest warrant against Sultan.
‘Sultan is accused in multiple cases, while arrest warrants have been issued against him in two cases. He has been arrested on the basis of an arrest warrant,’ added Pabna Sadar police station OC Roshan Ali.
The Bharara union parishad election was scheduled to be held on December 26, 2021. On December 11 of that year, independent candidate Yasin Alam was killed in a clash between the supporters of the then-chairman Abu Saeed Khan and two independent candidates – Sultan Mahmud Khan and Yasin Alam.
Later, a case was filed against several individuals, including Sultan Mahmud, in connection with this incident.
On June 15, 2022, in the Bharara union parishad election, Pabna Sadar upazila Awami League organising secretary, Abu Saeed Khan, was defeated by independent candidate Sultan Mahmud.
