The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday said that attaching and seizing properties and bank accounts of former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed was nothing but eyewash.

‘Due to international pressure, his [Benazir] bank accounts have been frozen. These are nothing but eyewash,’ BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said at a discussion at the National Press Club organised by the Dhaka centre of the Association of Engineers.

‘The stories that we are hearing about former IGP Benazir Ahmed every day are very much like those in the Arabic novel. Did different intelligence agencies of  the government not know about these events? Surely, they knew, but they did not do anything,’ Rizvi said, adding that the government will give them proper protection, because when this Benazir was the director general of the Rapid Action Battalion, many extrajudicial killings had been perpetrated.

‘Will prime minister Sheikh Hasina forget contributions of such officers as former IG Benazir Ahmed in keeping this government in power, excluding the people and voters?’ Rizvi said.

He said that these officers are responsible for the illegal seizure of power, as well as the inhuman and bloody roles played by these officers in keeping the government in power by excluding the people and the voters.

‘You will see that nothing will happen. You will see that after a few days, another incident will happen and you will turn your attention to it,’ he added.

On May 23, the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Court ordered to freeze 33 financial accounts, including 27 bank accounts of Benazir Ahmed, to facilitate the proper investigation into graft allegations against him.

The court also ordered attaching the properties of the former IGP under 83 deeds in Cox’s Bazar and Gopalganj districts.
