Intra-district bus services in Naogaon were suspended on Saturday as district transport workers enforced an indefinite strike following the arrest of three of their leaders and activists by law enforcers.
SM Motiuzzaman, general secretary of the Naogaon district motor sramik union, told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that members of the Rapid Action Battalion had arrested about 40 transport leaders and activists, including district motor workers union’s vice president Ashiqur Rahman, road transport affairs secretary Tulshi Kumar, and executive member Mizanur Rahman on May 19.
‘In protest of the arrests and demanding the immediate release of the detained, transport workers have stopped the bus service on the internal routes of Naogaon district indefinitely,’ he said.
Motiuzzaman added that they would escalate their actions if the arrested were not released soon.
Contacted, RAB-5 commanding officer lieutenant colonel Md Munim Ferdous told ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ· that they had arrested a total of 33 people in Naogaon on charges of collecting extortion from highways.
He mentioned that three separate cases would be filed against those arrested with the Naogaon Sadar police station.
Meanwhile, commuters dependent on public transport suffered due to the strike. Residents across the city and district were left stranded as no passenger buses operated on the city streets or departed from the district.
Large crowds were seen waiting for hours at various crossings for vehicles to reach their destinations.
However, auto-rickshaws and CNG-run three-wheelers exploited the situation by charging passengers exorbitant fares, according to the stranded commuters.
