The High Court on Monday allowed until July 7 to operate business activities of privately-run Bhawal Resort Limited in Gazipur, on the outskirt of the capital, after staying the department of environment’s embargo on the resort’s operation for damaging environment.

The department on May 14 fined the Bhawal Resort Limited Tk 2.40 crore for damaging the environment and asked the company not to operate until it obtains environmental clearance certificate.

The bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice SM Maniruzzaman, after hearing the company’ writ petition, stayed the execution of the fine and allowed its operation until it gives further order on July 7.

The court also asked the environment, forest and climate change ministry secretary and the department of environment’s director general to explain why imposition of the fine and asking Bhawal Resort Limited to stop its activities would not be declared illegal.

The court asked DoE to submit an affidavit on July 7 replying to the rule.

Bhawal Resort was established on 20 bighas of land in 2016 in Noljahni village at Baroipara, Gazipur to operate hotel, motel and resort and amusement park, according to the company.

Lawyer Sayed Ahmed Raza appeared for the resort while deputy attorney general Prakitar Chakma represented the government.
