Artist Md Ziaur Rahman said that he observed speed in nature to find inspiration for creating his artworks.

The artist has displayed his latest artworks in an exhibition under way at the Alliance Francaise de Dhaka in Dhanmondi in the capital.

‘I observe objects and animals in motion in nature. While observing the motion or speed of objects, I try to find inspiration for my artworks,’ said Ziaur Rahman.

The 12-day exhibition titled ‘Inner Speed’ is the second solo exhibition of the artist. It is featuring 54 artworks created using different mediums, including oil, acrylic, charcoal, soft pastel, ink brush, mixed and others.

About the exhibition, the artist said that he displayed artworks from his series depicting speed in nature.

The displayed artworks were created between 2020 and 2024, said the artist.

While talking about the subjects of the displayed artworks, Ziaur Rahman said that the main subject of the series is speed.

‘The horses and bulls in the artworks metaphorically depict the speed of animals in nature. To me, horses and bulls embody strength and speed. Therefore, I have drawn horses and bulls in different compositions using diverse mediums,’ said Ziaur Rahman.

The artist mentioned that he started creating artworks with such compositions when the world became quite motionless during the Covid-19 crisis.

‘Everyone experiences ups and downs in life. I try to find inspiration observing speed to overcome depression,’ said Ziaur Rahman.

He also mentioned that Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin’s artworks inspired him a lot during his journey.

A large number of the displayed artworks, titled ‘Bull Fighting in Nature-5’, ‘Angry Bull-2’, ‘Silent Bull-3’, ‘Fast Horse-6’, ‘Mad Bull’ and others are dominated by two colours — red and black.

‘Red colour provokes the most potent emotions among the living beings and the combination of red and black expresses visual dynamism. Therefore, I have used such composition in artworks to depict speed,’ said Ziaur Rahman.

His first solo show titled ‘Nirvadhi’ was held at the Chap Gallery in Narayanganj in 2009.

The artist’s second solo exhibition, which was inaugurated on Friday, will end on June 4.
