Chattogram experienced heavy rainfall since Monday morning, triggered by cyclone Remal, resulting in low-lying areas of the city submerged under water.

The cyclone also claimed the life of a rickshaw puller as a wall fell on him in Textile gate area in the port city.

The met office at Patenga recorded 132 millimetres of rainfall in three hours until Monday 9:00am with 73.4 millimetres recorded in the last 24 hours until 6:00am, submerging Bahaddarhat, Bakalia, Chawkbazar, Muradpur, 2 No Gate, Sholoshahar, East Nasirabad, Halishahar, CEPZ, Sagarika areas and other parts of the port city.

Sujoy Chowdhury, a private job holder, told 抖阴精品 that water stagnation was a recurring issue during every monsoon. He had to spend Tk 300, an unexpected expense in his budget, for a rickshaw due to the lack of public transport that morning.

Moreover, city residents endured power cuts since Sunday, he added.

Towhidul Islam, chief executive officer of Chattogram City Corporation, noted that certain areas, including Chawkbazar and Bahaddarhat, experienced more severe water stagnation.

He also attributed the delays in drainage construction work to the cyclone.

Confirming the death of the rickshaw puller, M Kamruzzaman, station in-charge of Bayazid fire service and civil defence, stated that the deceased was Saiful Islam, 26.

Saiful was killed on the spot when the wall of an under-construction building collapsed on him at about 8:00am. The fire service team recovered the body and sent it to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for autopsy, he added.

Due to heavy rain, the basement soil of the wall became loose, resulting the wall collapsed, the fire service official added.

Meanwhile, Chattogram Shah Amanat International Airport resumed all flight operations from 5:00am on Monday, after being closed since Sunday noon due to inclement weather.

Director of the airport group captain Taslim Ahmad confirmed the resumption news.

Chattogram Port Authority also began its operations slightly on Monday morning, with cargo vessels yet to leave the port due to rough weather conditions, said Omar Faruk, secretary of the port.

Nazrul Islam, executive engineer of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, confirmed that the tunnel resumed its operation on Monday afternoon, after being suspended on Sunday evening.

In 2017, the Chittagong Development Authority initiated the Chittagong Water stagnation Removal Project with a target completion date of June 2020.

However, only 76 per cent of the work has been completed so far, prompting the executive committee of the National Economic Council to extend the project鈥檚 tenure until June 2026, with a revised cost of Tk 8,626.62 crore for the second time.
