
A seminar on child rights, sexual abuse, trafficking and protection was held at the conference room of the Manarat International University in the capital’s Gulshan on Sunday. Â
The MIU organised the seminar titled Red Heart Campaign to Promote Child Rights of Sexually Abused, Exploited and Trafficked Children in collaboration with its Sexual Violence Prevention Cell Centre for Women and Children Studies. Â
Member of the board of trustees of the university and associate professor of the National Institute of Mental Health Dr Mekhala Sarkar was present as chief guest while the MIU acting vice-chancellor Professor Md Abdus Sabur Khan was present as special guest at the seminar.
Professor Ishrat Shamim, president of the Centre for Women and Children Studies delivered welcome speech at the seminar, which was presided over by dean of school of engineering, science and technology and convener of sexual abuse prevention cell of the university Nargis Sultana Chowdhury.
Mekhala Sarkar urged the parents to be aware of how the children interact with each other, saying, ‘You should keep an eye on where the children are staying, with whom they are talking and mixing.’
Children should be taught from an early age what contact is good and what is bad. Only then, all unwanted incidents like sexual abuse will be greatly reduced from the society, she added,
Abdus Sabur Khan called upon the students to reduce device dependence to prevent sexual harassment and abuse.
Device dependence is the root cause of all the unwanted incidents that girls are subjected to including sexual abuse. So to minimize device dependency you have to trust and rely on someone after careful scrutiny and awareness, he said.
