
The visiting team of the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has visited Bagjola canal at Polerhat near Kolkata in West Bengal along with Jihad Howladar, the suspected killer of ruling Awami League lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar, to find out remains of the victim.
DB chief Harun Or Rashid leads the three-member team while main investigator of the case Mahfuzur Rahman is in Dhaka, a DB official confirmed ¶¶Òõ¾«Æ·.
The official said that the team also visited a New Town flat in Kolkata, the reported place of the murder, on Sunday and Monday.
The team took Jihad, a Bangladeshi citizen and a butcher by profession who is now in police custody in the murder case, to the flat.
The official said that the team in the past two days interrogated Jihad in presence of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Indian police as the DMP team interacted with officers of the Bidhannagar Commissionerate and West Bengal CID officials soon after reaching Kolkata on Sunday.
India-based media outlets reported that when the visiting team went to Bagjola, they saw police personnel using fishing nets and underwater drones to trace the dismembered body parts of Anwarul without success.
They reported that the team also went to the New Town flat at Sanjeeva Gardens near Aquatica Water Park which Akhtaruzzaman Shahin, the suspected mastermind of the murder, had rented allegedly to commit the murder.
The Dhaka police said that the weapons used in dismembering Anwarul’s body were yet to be located.
On May 12, Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul visited his friend Gopal Biswas’ house in Kolkata and he mysteriously disappeared on the next day.
On May 22, Kolkata detectives confirmed that the Bangladeshi lawmaker was murdered.
The Indian police, however, could not recover the body in almost 12 days.
