Politicians and professionals on Thursday at a commemoration meeting remembered Shib Narayan Das, the first designer of the Bangladesh national flag.

They said that the role of the freedom fighter and also the first designer of the national flag of Bangladesh Shib Narayan Das should be remembered as part of history of Bangladesh.


Shib Narayan Das commemoration committee organised the meeting at the National Press Club, where former Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal leader and also a lawyer ZI Khan Panna chaired.

The president of the Bangladesh Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Sharif Nurul Ambia, said that during his student life Shib Narayan Das was involved in student politics and he designed the first national flag of Bangladesh and that also took part in the War of Independence in 1971.

Shib Narayan was a true politician who never compromised with his political ideals.

Nagarik Oikya president Mahmudur Rahman Manna said, ‘We must recognise the role of Shib Narayan in designing the first national flag of Bangladesh.’

Bangladesher Samyabadi Andolan coordinator Shuvrangshu Chakrobareety said that Shib Narayan wanted to establish a democratic, non-sectarian Bangladesh which was not established so far.

Bangladesh JSD general secretary Nazmul Haque Prodhan said that his party would continue struggle for fulfilling dreams of freedom fighter Shib Narayan Das.

Shib Narayan Das died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on April 19 at the age of 78.

Former student leader Shafi Ahmed proposed that the former JSD leaders could form a platform for establishing a democratic country following the spirits of the War of Independence.

Former student leader Nazmul Alam Pakhi, Zahirul Islam, labour leader Abdul Oahed, Kamal Uddin, the son of Shib Narayan, Arnab Das, and others spoke at the commemoration meeting.

Member secretary of the udjapan committee Badal Khan conducted the programme.
