The main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Saturday asked the government how former police chief Benazir Ahmed and his family could leave the country if the government was serious in dealing with corruption.
Having mentioned that Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader said that investigation was going on regarding former army chief Aziz Ahmed and former police chief Benazir Ahmed and action would be taken, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir asked, ‘So how did Benazir’s family leave the country? Do they think the people of Bangladesh are stupid? As the Awami League is ruling the country through fraud, it is again deceiving the people of the country.’
The BNP leader came up with the remarks while addressing a discussion at the National Press Club.
The Bangladesh Sammilita Peshajibi Parishad organised the discussion marking the 43rd death anniversary of BNP founder Ziaur Rahman.
‘Not only one Aziz and Benazir, but many Aziz and Benazir have been created by the rulers. The government has turned Bangladesh to a country of plundering,’ he said, adding that through movement the government would be ousted and would be replaced by a people’s government.
He further said that the government statement on Benazir and distraining his property were nothing but a sham.
Fakhrul further said that the famine of 1974 struck Bangladesh due to the corruption of the Awami League which led to the death of thousands of people in starvation.
He said that the fight against the government was not an ordinary fight and the BNP had to fight against fascism as this regime was using weapons.
He declared that the BNP would continue the movement until success comes.
‘Many may say that the BNP has been agitating for 15 years, but has not been able to achieve success. But the BNP did not lose. The fight will continue until success comes as a movement does not succeed in one day; patience is needed,’ he said.
‘The struggle to oust the government is going on. Problems are everywhere—no work is done without problems,’ he said, adding that many people are dying while fighting but the BNP did not back down.
He reminded the audience that sometimes tactics needed to change which is done through discussion.
‘When success comes everyone claims its share, but when defeat happens no one stands by,’ he observed.
‘We believe that we are not failure. We are re-energised, we have started anew. Inshallah victory will be ours, because we are fighting for truth and justice,’ he said.
The discussion was presided over by Bangladesh Sammilita Peshajibi president AZM Zahid Hossain and moderated by its member secretary Quader Gani Chowdhury.
