Home minister Asaduzzaman Khan on Saturday said that he was not aware whether former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed was in the country or had left.

‘I still don’t know for sure whether he is in the country or left. I will have to speak after knowing about the matter,’ the home minister said in response to journalists’ questions after a programme at Dhaka University’s Teacher-Student Centre.

About media reports on Benazir’s departure, the minister said, ‘We have not banned him yet... I still don’t know for sure if he is in the country or gone.’

The police force is doing very well as they are facing many challenges, he said, adding that if a person does anything wrong, the organisation will not take responsibility for it.

In response to another question, he said that there were provisions in the country to mete out punishment if any individual made illegal wealth doing any wrong thing.

‘We have nothing to say here as we don’t have any information about what he [Benazir] did wrong,’ Asaduzzaman said, adding that the matter is now under investigation.

‘After the investigation is done, it will be known whether he [Benazir] is guilty or innocent and how much money he has made,’ he said.

Responding to a question about slain Awami League lawmaker Anwarul Azim Anar, who reportedly was killed in a Kolkata flat, the home minister said that the murder of the lawmaker took place in India and so the case was filed in India.

‘The United States has a prisoner exchange and repatriation agreement with India. So the government of India will appeal to them to bring the prime suspect back form the US,’ he said.

Everyone, including the prime minister, is concerned about this murder, he said, adding that those who are guilty, those who have perpetrated the murder or those who have cooperated in the murder will be tried according to law.

AL Jhenaidah-4 lawmaker Anwarul was allegedly killed in Kolkata’s New Town flat as he went to Kolkata on May 12 and went missing since May 14.
