A woman died allegedly in police custody at Abhaynagar police station in Jashore on Sunday.

The police claimed to have arrested the woman along with 30 pieces of Yaba pills,


The custodial death victim is Afroza Begum, 40, wife of Abdul Jalil of Dhopadi Crossing in ward 4 under the Nawapara municipality.

Abdul Jalil, husband of the victim lodged a complaint with executive magistrate Md Nabid Hossain and assistant superintendent of the police, Jahidur Rahman.

According to the complaint, assistant sub-inspector Silon Ali tortured Afroza at her residence at the time of arrest at dead of night.

She was then brought to the Abhaynagar police station where she became sick.

Shubra Prakash Das, inspector for investigation of Abhaynagar police station, told journalists that the police detained Afroza Begum along with 30 pieces of Yaba pills at about 1:30am on Sunday.

She was then taken to Abhaynagar police station, the officer said, adding that she was rushed to Abhaynagar Upazila Health Complex as she felt sick after 8:00am.

She was then taken to the police station, Shubra Prakash said, adding that she was again taken to the upazila health complex as her condition deteriorated and later was referred to Jashore General Hospital for better treatment.

‘She was not tortured by the police,’ he added.

M Munna, elder son of the victim claimed that his mother was innocent.

Hasib Mohammad Ali, a medical officer of Jashore General Hospital, told journalists that the woman was brought dead to the hospital.
