A social worker on Sunday alleged that about 150 bharis of her gold jewellery disappeared from a locker of Ismali Bank in the port city.

The owner of the gold accused the Bank officials of involving in the heist.

The incident took place at 1:30pm on Wednesday when the owner of the jewellery, Rokeya Bari, 60, wife of MM Bari, from the Chatteswary Road in the Chawkbazar area, went to the Chawkbazar branch of Islami Bank to bring some jewellery.

Rokeya Bari said that she went to the Islami Bank Chawkbazar branch near the Chawkbazar police station to bring some jewellery sets.

She said that she asked an official of the bank to open the locker she used and after some time the official informed her that the door of the locker was opened.

She rushed to the locker and saw that there were no gold boxes containing about 150 bharis of gold jewellery, she said, adding that she found only two boxes there containing about 10 bharis of jewellery.

Rokeya also said that she was silent for about 10 minutes and then she asked a bank official to call the bank manager, who was absent on that day.

Later, Rokeya went to Chawkbazar police station and submitted a written a complaint to the police station in this regard.

Rokeya said that the officer-in-charge of the police station, Waliuddin, went to the Bank and asked for details about the incident, but the bank officials refused to give any details.

‘My two daughters-in-law, my daughter and I own the jewellery sets. I became sick after the incident and due to a public holiday, the court was closed,’ Rokeya said, adding, ‘This night [Sunday] I would file a case against the Bank officials and the manager.’

Neither Bank manager Shafiqul Mowla nor OC Waliuddin could be reached for comments despite repeated attempts over their cell phones.
